Resources for Reading offers a wide variety of materials and supplies for Reading Recovery® and early literacy teachers -- magnetic letters, easels, magnetic boards, reading games, writing journals, phonics materials -- all kinds of things which should be easy to find, but aren't. We have them all available on a single order with a single set of purchase order paperwork.
Our goal is to help save you from running around to several different places gathering your materials. We know that teachers have more important things to do!
Resources for Reading was founded in January 1994 by a Reading Recovery Teacher and her engineer husband. Along with the other teachers in her Reading Recovery®training group, she had trouble locating sources for the materials needed to implement Reading Recovery. The books themselves were the easy part. Much harder were things like magnetic letters.
Upper case magnetic letters were easy to find; almost any toy store carries them, or can get them. Lower case magnetic letters were another story altogether. Not to mention lower case magnetic letters that had both straight tails on letters like "t" and curved "D'Nealian" tails. Toy manufacturers don't care about the shapes of their magnetic letters -- they think of them only as toys. Teachers know better. We found manufacturers around the world who make the letters in different styles, and have collected them together here for you.
Many other items either were not available, or the ones that were available just weren't suitable for teachers. We negotiate with many manufacturers around the world to make custom products to our specifications, exactly what Reading Recovery teachers need. You'll find that our easels, writing journals, and sentence strips are of the highest quality available, and are specifically designed for use in Reading Recovery. All our markers and other products are tested in actual use for Reading Recovery, and all are certified non-toxic, of course!
Today Resources for Reading carries over 150 different sets of magnetic letters, more than 30 types of easels and magnetic boards, plus writing journals and all the ancillary materials you need to implement Reading Recovery and other early literacy programs. In addition, we have a wide variety of reading games and motivational aids for early literacy teachers, including materials for letter recognition, phonics and phonemic awareness, word building, vocabulary, guided reading and interactive writing.
Our prices are not always the lowest on each and every item, but for most items our price is lowest! You'll find that our regular catalog price is discounted well below what you'll find anywhere else, up to 60% on some items. And everyone gets the discount prices! No funny games with some customers but not others. Above all, our primary concern is your convenience. But even on the few cases where our price might be beat by another store, we hope that your time is valuable enough that getting all your materials on a single order is worth it.
Beginning literally as a garage-shop operation with one person doing everything, we have grown to 10 people in a 20,000-ft2 warehouse. We've grown, but we're still for and about teachers, and we rely heavily on word of mouth among teachers. If you like our service, and the products we carry, please tell your friends! On the other hand, if you have a problem or a complaint, please be sure to call us and talk to us first so we can fix any problems. We make mistakes like everyone, but we promise we'll make it right! All we ask is that you give us the chance.
